Fuse Board Upgrades & EICR Testing

Consumer unit replacements and relocations, EICR reports for landlords and homeowners, fault-finding and full installation testing.

Consumer unit upgrades

The consumer unit, still widely called the fuse board or fuse box, is the part of the installation that protects everything else. An older board with rewireable fuses or early plastic-cased breakers will not offer the level of protection required by the current wiring regulations, and in many cases offers no RCD protection at all.

A modern board changes that. RCBOs protect each circuit individually, so a fault in one room no longer takes out half the house. Surge protection guards connected electronics against spikes. Metal enclosures meet the current fire-containment requirement introduced under the 18th Edition.

An upgrade is usually a single day's work. Before the new board goes in, the existing installation is tested. There is no sense fitting new protective devices to circuits with underlying faults, and a board change will often reveal problems the old fuses were quietly tolerating. Anything found is explained and priced before it is put right.

EICR reports

An Electrical Installation Condition Report is a formal inspection of the fixed wiring in a property. It records the condition of the installation and codes any issues found:

  • C1: danger present. Immediate risk. Made safe on the spot.
  • C2: potentially dangerous. Needs remedial work for the report to be satisfactory.
  • C3: improvement recommended. Not a failure; worth addressing.
  • FI: further investigation required. Something needs looking at in more depth.

Since April 2021, landlords in England have been legally required to hold a valid EICR for rented properties, renewed at least every five years, with a copy supplied to tenants and to the local authority on request. Owner-occupiers are not obliged to have one, but ten years is the usual recommended interval, and a report is worth having before buying a property or starting a major refurbishment.

Fault-finding

Intermittent faults are the ones that cost people money elsewhere. A breaker that trips at the same time each evening, a circuit that fails only in wet weather, a light that flickers on one particular switch. These take methodical testing to trace rather than guesswork, and that is exactly how they are approached here.

FAQ

Common questions.

Q1How much does an EICR cost?+
It depends on the size of the property and the number of circuits, so every EICR is quoted up front after a short conversation about the property. There are no hidden extras added afterwards.
Q2How long is an EICR valid for?+
For rented property in England the maximum interval is five years, or sooner if the report specifies. For an owner-occupied home, ten years is the usual recommendation, and any time you buy a property.
Q3My EICR came back unsatisfactory. What now?+
An unsatisfactory result means at least one C1 or C2 item was found. Those items need remedial work, after which the report can be signed off as satisfactory. You will be given a clear list of what needs doing and what it will cost.
Q4Do I need to upgrade my fuse board to pass an EICR?+
Not automatically. An older board is often coded C3, meaning improvement recommended rather than a failure. A board is only a C2 where there is a genuine safety shortfall, such as missing RCD protection on circuits that require it.

★★★★★Spotlights & Sockets
Shafick was a pleasure to work with, professional, punctual, and reasonably priced. He installed spotlights in the living room and master bedroom, extended the TV switchboard, and added an extra power socket. His workmanship was clean, precise, and tidy. I’m very impressed with the quality of his work and would highly recommend him to anyone looking for reliable electrical services.

★★★★★Loft Conversion Wiring
Shafick was an absolute professional. He was very easy to deal with, communication and quality of work was on point. He came to find me still undecided about some of the internal partitions I was creating, and he accommodated the possibilities as he was laying his cables. The outcome made us very happy.
