Security & Exterior Lighting

PIR floodlights, wall lights and facade lighting fitted to houses, garages and boundary walls, bright where it needs to be and properly weatherproofed.

Security lighting that actually works

Security lighting has a straightforward job: remove the dark corners around a property, and make anyone approaching it visible. Doing that well is less about raw brightness than about aim and placement. A single glaring floodlight over a door creates as much deep shadow as it removes, and dazzles the person using the door.

Better results come from several lower-output fittings covering the approaches: the drive, the side passage, the back door and the garage, each aimed downwards so the light lands on the ground rather than into a neighbour's window. PIR sensors are set with sensible detection ranges and timings so they trigger on people rather than on cats and passing traffic.

Wall lights and facade lighting

The same fittings that improve security also do a great deal for how a property looks. Up-and-down wall lights on brickwork throw a pair of triangles of light across the surface, which is why they read so strongly on a textured elevation. Spaced evenly along a wall or a boundary, the effect is one of the most noticeable improvements you can make to the outside of a house.

  • Up-down wall lights on house elevations, garden walls and gateposts.
  • PIR floodlights covering drives, side access and rear gardens.
  • Soffit and canopy downlights recessed into porches, car ports and extension overhangs.
  • Garage and outbuilding lighting, internal and external.
  • Dusk-to-dawn fittings where a light should simply be on whenever it is dark.

Weatherproofing and supply

Everything outdoors needs the right IP rating for its position, glands and seals fitted correctly, and RCD protection on the circuit. Cable entries into brickwork are sealed so water cannot track back inside. Where several fittings are going on, they are usually run as their own circuit rather than spurred off the nearest indoor light, which makes switching, timing and future fault-finding far simpler.

Cameras and alarm systems are a separate trade, but the power supplies and cable routes they need can be put in at the same time.

FAQ

Common questions.

Q1Will security lights annoy my neighbours?+
Not if they are aimed properly. Fittings are angled so light falls within your own boundary, and PIR sensitivity and detection range are set to avoid triggering on next door's garden or passing traffic.
Q2Should exterior lights be on a sensor or a switch?+
Often both. Security positions such as drives and side access work best on PIR. Decorative wall lighting on a facade is usually better on a timer or photocell so it comes on at dusk and looks deliberate.
Q3Can you fit lights to a wall with no existing supply?+
Yes. A new circuit is run to the position, usually from the consumer unit, with the cable route agreed with you first so it stays discreet.
Q4Do outdoor lights need special fittings?+
Yes. Anything outdoors needs an ingress-protection rating suitable for its position, and the circuit needs RCD protection. Indoor fittings used outside will fail early and will be coded on an EICR.

★★★★★Spotlights & Sockets
Shafick was a pleasure to work with, professional, punctual, and reasonably priced. He installed spotlights in the living room and master bedroom, extended the TV switchboard, and added an extra power socket. His workmanship was clean, precise, and tidy. I’m very impressed with the quality of his work and would highly recommend him to anyone looking for reliable electrical services.

★★★★★Loft Conversion Wiring
Shafick was an absolute professional. He was very easy to deal with, communication and quality of work was on point. He came to find me still undecided about some of the internal partitions I was creating, and he accommodated the possibilities as he was laying his cables. The outcome made us very happy.
